What to send a mechanic on WhatsApp before asking for a quote

A clear first message helps a garage understand the problem and decide whether it can help. Before asking “How much?”, give the mechanic enough information to identify the vehicle and the job.

Start with the vehicle and the symptoms

Include the make, model, year and engine size if you know it. Describe what you noticed in plain language: when it happens, how long it has been happening and whether any warning lights appeared. A description such as “the noise happens when I turn at low speed” is more useful than guessing which part needs replacing. Mention recent repairs that could be relevant.

Explain where the vehicle is

Give the parish and neighbourhood, and say whether you can bring the vehicle to the garage or need to ask about a mobile visit. A business appearing in a directory for your parish does not guarantee that it travels to every address. Confirm the workshop location, appointment time and any inspection or call-out charge directly.

Ask for the scope, not just a number

A mechanic may need to inspect the vehicle before giving a repair price. Ask whether the first amount is for diagnosis, labour, parts or a combination. For a repair quote, request the proposed work, the parts being supplied, estimated completion time and any warranty terms. Make sure both quotes cover comparable work before choosing between them.
